What is a digital certificate?

A digital certificate authenticates the online credentials and identity of a person or organization and allows web users and recipients to know that the data they’re inputting is going to a trusted source. They are akin to security badges forÌýwebsitesÌýand users and help keep the internet safe. Digital certificates are issued by Certificate Authorities (CAs) and are used to encrypt data online. Digital certificates are also known as public key certificates or identity certificates.


What is a TLS/SSL certificate?

A TLS/SSL certificate serves two purposes:

  1. Encrypts and secures data transmitted between websites, browsers and web servers
  2. Helps to identify and authenticate website owners.

TLS/SSL certificates ensure HTTPS and the padlock icon appear in the URL bar. In addition, TLS certificates keep the internet secure.
